As one of the leading medical employment agencies in Sacramento, California, Pacific MedStaff knows that for many allied health professionals, interviewing is a stressful and exhausting experience. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re searching for a job in allied health – and you approach each interview right – the experience can become your doorway to a rewarding new opportunity. To help you ace your next interview, here are some tips to follow:

  • Be prepared. Make sure you research the company or healthcare facility before your interview. Find out about the culture and what it takes to succeed in it. Doing so will also help you formulate thoughtful questions to ask during the interview.
  • Dress for success. The way you look matters. And when it comes to a job interview, formal is always better. So make sure you dress in appropriate business attire, such as a suit. Keep your jewelry and make-up to a minimum. Don’t wear any cologne or perfume. Make sure your hair and nails are neat. You don’t want to distract the hiring manager because of your appearance.
  • Bring copies of your resume. Although the hiring manager will likely have a copy of your resume, bring extras just in case.
  • Get there early. Plan to arrive at the interview 15 minutes early. If you’re not sure where the facility is, do a test run the day before. Keep in mind: GPS and Google Maps aren’t always correct. The last thing you want is to get lost on your way to the interview.
  • Leave your phone in the car. You’re not going to need it during the interview. Plus you don’t want to risk the chance of forgetting to turn it on “silent” and having it ring during the interview.
  • Display positive body language. Be sure to greet everyone with a smile, firm handshake and plenty of eye contact.
  • Be ready for common interview questions. The hiring manager will likely ask you some unique questions, but there are also many common ones you’ll be asked, as well. Be prepared for them. These include questions like: Tell me about yourself, What are your strengths?, and What are your weaknesses?
  • Be ready for behavioral based questions. Many hiring managers also ask questions that require you to give real world examples of how you handled specific work situations. So be prepared to share past experiences with them.
  • Ask your own questions. You want to show the hiring manager you are genuinely interested in the healthcare facility. Asking thoughtful questions is the best way to do that. Also, remember, interviews are a two-way conversation. Asking questions is your opportunity to find out whether the employer is a good fit for you.
  • Send a follow up thank you note. After the interview, send a note to the hiring manager thanking them for the opportunity to interview. Also reiterate your strengths and your interest in the job.
