From office workers to accountants to paralegals, the demand for temporary employees is on the rise. One reason is that employers in Sacramento – and beyond – are feeling more upbeat about their short-term prospects, however not quite confident enough to add workers to their permanent overhead. But if you’re looking for a full-time position, don’t despair. Many times, temp jobs can turn into permanent positions. Here are some tips to help you facilitate the process:

1. Maintain a positive attitude.

It’s easy to think of yourself as “just a temp” or an outsider at the company. But ditch that attitude. The reason you are assigned to a temp job is because the company needs you. So take the opportunity you’ve been provided and shine.

2. Act and dress the part.

It’s easy to develop bad work habits, especially if you think that, as a temp, you won’t be sticking around long. Instead, think of the assignment as an audition – or a really long interview – and do all you can to make a good impression. Get to work a few minutes early each day and don’t be eager to rush out the door at the end of the work day. Demonstrate your strong work ethic and high energy. Also, be sure to dress appropriately.

3. Do an excellent job.

Many employers are reluctant to hire because they’re afraid that a bad hiring decision could negatively impact productivity. So give them a reason to hire you. Do your job to the best of your ability and then ask if there are other areas in which you can help out. If you prove yourself capable and demonstrate a strong work ethic, an employer will be much more comfortable hiring you full-time.

4. Demonstrate any special skills.

The temp job might include a very specific set of tasks and so the employer may not be aware of other special skills you have. Look for opportunities to demonstrate those abilities.

5. Network within the company.

Get to know your co-workers. Eat lunch with them and attend company events, if you’re invited. Learn about who the key players are at the company and try to make a positive impression on them. Become a familiar face and try to establish a good rapport with all those you come in contact with. When a full-time position opens up, a referral from an existing employee of the company speaks volumes.

6. Ask for the job.

Whether you’re working for a Sacramento temporary employment agency, or directly for the employer, let them know that you are interested in a full-time position. Even if something isn’t immediately available, at least you’re on their radar as a potential hire.
