Building a successful career takes a ton of hard work, some wise decisions, and a little luck and good timing. But you can eventually kiss it all good-bye if you’re making these 6 career-killing mistakes:

1. Not networking

Much of your career success will result from relationships you’ve developed with the co-workers, managers, and clients you work with in your Rancho Cordova job. So if you isolate yourself, and don’t make an effort to develop strong relationships, you could be slowly killing your career.

Instead, step outside your comfort zone and develop and leverage relationships with others to help you achieve career success. People with strong networks tend to be better team players and receive more promotions as a result of their efforts.

2. Not taking calculated risks

If lack of knowledge is stopping you from taking a risk, then figure out what you need to do to obtain the necessary information. Don’t be afraid to fail or make a mistake. If it happens, admit it and move on. You’ll likely learn a lot from the situation and be able to apply that new-found knowledge in the future.

That said, don’t take a risk just for the sake of it; take calculated risks that can offer significant rewards.

3. Not setting any goals

When you don’t have any goals, you’re not really headed anywhere. So set specific objectives for yourself and make plans on how you are going to work each day toward achieving those objectives. If you’re not moving forward and growing, then you’re career will stagnate and eventually flounder.

4. Engaging in an office romance

Whether it’s with your boss or a co-worker, an office romance is a bad idea any way you look at it. Not only do you have to continue to work with that person even if things end badly, but you’re also opening yourself up to potential sexual harassment charges.

5. Being difficult and demanding

Negative behavior, such as constant complaining, always shooting down other people’s ideas, and being a control freak, can cause your career to falter, whether you realize it or not. Even if you are excellent at what you do, when you exhibit this kind of bad behavior, your co-workers will avoid you and your boss will get irritated with you because you’re undermining team efforts.

6. Neglecting your appearance

You might think that appearance doesn’t matter because you’ve got the right qualifications and experience.

But you’d be wrong.

Fair or not, how you present yourself matters because it leads people to make assumptions about you. And if you’re dressed sloppy or speak in an unprofessional manner, then people will think that’s likely how you approach your work – in a sloppy, unprofessional manner.
