As one of Florin’s top employment firms, Pacific Staffing knows that with the end of the year rapidly approaching, it’s a great time to take a step back and take the temperature of your career to ensure you’re on a healthy path. To help you get started, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Tip #1: Get Feedback.

This doesn’t have to be in the form of a formal, year-end performance review with your boss. It could be at the end of each assignment you complete and you can also solicit feedback from your colleagues, as well. Considering that you’re working side-by-side with them each day, they may be able offer you some valuable insight into your strengths and areas that need improvement.

And when you request feedback, don’t just ask “how am I doing?” Instead, develop a few targeted questions about areas that you most want to know about.

Tip #2: Promote Yourself Online.

You should be investing some time and energy into creating a professional online presence for yourself. This can include things like your LinkedIn profile, participation in industry forums and blogs, and membership on association websites. If you’re represented well online, you have a much better chance at recruiters and employers being able to find you and making a positive impression on them.

Tip #3: Assess Your Network.

Having solid relationships with people within your industry is important for career success. So make sure you’re investing enough time into networking. Efforts might include anything from attending annual conferences to participating in local industry groups and forums.

In addition, if you really want to increase your visibility and advance your career, then consider taking on a leadership role within a local or industry organization.

Tip #4: Stay-in-the-Know About Your Industry.

Are you reading industry websites, blogs and books? Are you seeking out any professional development or continuing education opportunities? If you’re not, then now’s the time to start. Not only will you be able to hone or learn new skills, but continuing your education also provides a valuable opportunity to network.

Tip #5: Be Prepared for a Job Search.

Whether it comes from a need (layoff) or desire (for greener pastures), you should always be updating your resume with your most current information…especially in today’s tumultuous economy. Otherwise, you’re going to be starting from scratch every time you engage in a new job search.

In addition, you should also be keeping track of important accomplishments, so that when the time comes, you can highlight them in your cover letter, on your resume, or during a job interview.
