Is your hiring process taking up too many resources? Are you wondering why the last few candidates you hired are floundering at best? Do you wish there was an easier way to recruit and hire better employees?

Well, as one of Woodland’s leading staffing agencies, Pacific Staffing knows there is. And it’s all about injecting some good, old-fashioned common sense into the hiring process. Not only will it make the process easier, but it will also take some of the risk out of it, helping you hire right.

Here are 4 tips for better hiring:

Let Past Performance Be Your Guide.

You have people on your team who consistently perform above expectations. So why not use them as a guide when looking to hire employees…just like them? For instance, evaluate what it is that makes them successful at your company. Is it a certain kind of personality, or a very specific skill set? When you determine what those star qualities are, you’ll then be able to look for candidates with those same qualities.

Write Better Job Descriptions.

Today’s anemic economy means that you’re going to get plenty of resumes from qualified – and unqualified – candidates. But if you write sharper, more detailed job descriptions, you’ll have a better chance of getting the kinds of candidates you want. That said, “detailed” doesn’t mean your description should be a novella. It just means including clear and specific statements in your postings.

Vague statements like “must be a team player,” or “solid interpersonal skills required” aren’t going to do much to screen out bad candidates. Therefore, in addition to being more specific, also include information that will help a candidate better determine whether the job would be a good fit for them. For instance, you can include a description of a typical day or project, rather than just listing all the responsibilities.

Give Top Candidates Homework.

Not sure if a candidate is a good fit? Then give your top three selections a homework assignment. Have them complete a task or project that would be typical for the position they’re applying for. By giving a real assignment, you can better evaluate their creativity, work ethic, and skill level.

Always Be Hiring.

Finally, don’t only start up the hiring process when an employee quits. Hiring and recruiting should be an ongoing process that you devote regular attention to. So invest time and effort in building a strong employment brand and engaging a candidate that would be a good fit for your organization.
