You found it. Finally. A posting for your dream job. It’s right up your alley, your skills and qualifications are a perfect match, and it’s at a company you’ve always wanted to work for.

Trouble is, you applied two weeks ago and haven’t heard back. What gives? Should you re-submit your resume or try to connect with someone in HR?

First, as one of the leading employment agencies in Northern California, Pacific Staffing can tell you that while a couple weeks may seem like an endless amount of time for you as a job seeker, it’s really not all that much for a hiring manager. They’re likely hiring for other positions, not just the one you applied to and, as a result, have hundreds of resumes to wade through. That’s not to mention all the other HR tasks they’re busy with during their day-to-day in the office.

Bottom line? You may want to wait a bit longer to see if you hear back.

If it’s been more than a few weeks, though, then go ahead and re-submit your application. It’s possible that your resume got lost in the shuffle and never saw the light of day.

Another possibility? Your resume got rejected by the company’s applicant tracking system. That’s why it’s so important for you to make sure you use keywords and phrases from the job posting in it. So you may want to revise your resume and match, point by point, the job’s requirements with your qualifications.

That said, there are some risks associated with doing so. For instance, the hiring process could simply be really slow and when you re-submit a substantially altered resume, then you could be seen as desperate or inconsistent. That’s why, instead of re-submitting your application, you may want to consider contacting the hiring manager or recruiter directly instead.

Whether you contact HR or re-submit your application, if you don’t hear back again, then it’s time to walk away. Applying over and over will do you no good.
