As one of the leading employment agencies in Woodland, we know that the thought of asking for a promotion is generally pretty scary for most people. What if your boss says “no” or worse yet, tells you you’re just lucky to have a job?

But the fact of the matter is that companies are doing more with less – which means they’re relying more heavily on their core group of employees to take on added responsibilities and still deliver positive results. As a result, if you’re a good worker, then you’re likely an asset to your company.

However, getting a promotion isn’t as easy as just asking for one. If you think you deserve a promotion, you must first demonstrate your value to your boss. How can you do that?

Through the use of one critical word: “Because.”

The word “because” forces you to think about why you actually deserve a promotion and, in turn, gives you the ammunition you need to successfully pitch your boss on the idea. Despite what you think, your boss doesn’t know what you’re doing every second of the day. Nor is he or she always aware of all your important accomplishments. So it’s up to you to sing your own praises in order to land the promotion you deserve.

For instance:

“I think I deserve a promotion BECAUSE I’m the first one in the office in the morning and the last one to leave at night. I’m committed to this company and its success and have demonstrated that through positive results, such as bringing in two new clients last month and three new clients the month before.”

Or:

“I think I deserve a promotion BECAUSE I’m a terrific project manager. In the last project I led, not only did my team complete their goals under budget and on time, but the client was thrilled with the results and referred several new customers to us.”

Beyond demonstrating your value, here are a few other tips:

  • Start keeping a running list of your accomplishments ranging from small process improvements to large projects handled. Include any quantifiable results, such as “increased sales by 10%.”
  • Do some research ahead of time so you know your worth in the job market.
  • Don’t just drop in on your boss unexpectedly and ask for a promotion. Schedule a meeting with him or her to discuss your performance and career plans.
  • In addition to touting past accomplishments, tell your boss about how you plan to build on those successes in the future. Talk about your goals and how achieving those goals will benefit your boss and the company.

If your boss denies your request for a promotion, ask him or her what you need to do in the future in order to get one. But if there’s no room for advancement at your current company and you’re ready for a new opportunity, Pacific Staffing can help.
