You’ve been searching for a new job for a while. Then you come across it – a posting that sounds right up your alley. The only snag? It’s with a past employer.

Should you ignore it or apply?

As one of the leading employment firms in Woodland, Pacific Staffing can tell you that unless you had some major issue with the past employer (think criminal activity or poor performance) or seriously burned bridges, you should absolutely apply. If you’re like most, chances are you chose to move onto greener pastures when the right opportunity came along. Nothing personal. Now you’re ready to come back home, so to speak, to a company that you know well.

And, in fact, the employer may welcome you back with open arms. Why? Because you can provide them with a variety of advantages.

For instance, you already know the business and, as a result, onboarding and training time will be minimal. In addition, you’re a known entity. In other words, the employer knows that you’re skilled and dependable, and that you’re a fit for the culture.

So now that feel you may be ready to return to your former employer, what steps should you take to express your interest to them?

  • First, re-connect with your former boss and colleagues and let them know you’re interested in coming back. You can do so by simply giving them a call, or setting up a lunch with them. Ask them what their thoughts are on you returning to the company and how likely it is that you’d be re-hired.
  • Second, be prepared to sell the idea. For instance, you don’t want to look like you’re simply settling in order to land a job. You need to be able to articulate why you want to return and why the employer should consider re-hiring you. For instance, do you have an expanded skill set that would benefit the company?
  • Third, don’t assume you’re a shoo-in and slack off during the hiring process. Just because you may know the people interviewing you or have insider knowledge about the company doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare for the process.
