Trying to break into a new industry is hard enough in a good economy. In a bad one, it can seem downright impossible.

But, as one of Sacramento’s leading employment agencies, Pacific Staffing can tell you that it is doable – if you take the right approach. To help you, here are 5 tips to follow:

Tip #1: Learn all you can about the industry.

Before jumping into a new industry, it’s important to learn all you can about it, so you can see where you fit in and which of your skills and strengths are transferrable. So read books, join industry forums or groups, talk to industry movers and shakers, take on an internship that enables you to immerse yourself in the industry, and learn all you can about the key challenges and trends within the industry.

Tip #2: Make it clear you have the skills to do the job.

The #1 issue a hiring manager will be concerned with is whether or not you have the skills to do the work. They may not fully understand what you did in your past positions in a different industry. So it’s up to you to explain how that experience is relevant and how it’s prepared you to take on this new opportunity.

Tip #3: Don’t appear desperate.

You may want to switch industries badly. But don’t drop your salary requirements too much (for instance from $75k to $40k) just to land a job. When you do so, you’ll appear desperate and less desirable as a result. You may need to take a bit of a pay cut, but one that big will not only hurt your finances, but your career as well.

Tip #4: Expand your network.

Expand your network so it includes people in the industry you’d like to switch to. You can do so online, via sites like LinkedIn, or by joining professional industry groups. Once you connect with those in the industry you’re targeting, ask them for advice on breaking into the field and how to set yourself apart from other job candidates.

Tip #5: Work with an employment agency.

Experienced recruiters at an employment agency will know exactly how to position your past experience so it’s relevant to the kinds of jobs you’re applying for. In addition, they can act as a career advisor and help you craft a strong resume and prepare for interviews.
