Finally! You’ve been offered that promotion. You’re ready for the new challenges and the new responsibilities.

The trouble is, you also just found out the higher position doesn’t come with a higher salary. In fact, you’ll be doing a lot more and working longer hours, only to be making the same exact amount of money.

Should you turn the promotion down, or take it on and make the best of it?

It depends on the situation.

As one of Rancho Cordova’s leading employment agencies, Pacific Staffing can tell you if you like what you do and you have a good employer, then you may want to consider the opportunity. In today’s volatile marketplace, more and more employers are promoting workers, assessing their performance, and then offering healthy raises based on positive results. Employers simply want to ensure the newly promoted can do the job before offering bigger bucks.

On the flip side, perhaps your company is in financial crisis and needs you to do more with less. If that’s the case, reconsider taking on more work without more pay and instead look for a new job elsewhere. If you don’t, you may wind up going down with the ship.

To properly assess the situation and help you make the right decision, here are some questions to ask before you accept or reject the promotion:

Why is there no pay raise?

Again, if the employer lays out certain goals and expectations with the promise of a raise (in writing) once those are met, then the promotion is certainly worth consideration.

In addition, perhaps your boss sees a lot of potential in you, but knows you’re still inexperienced in certain areas. If that’s the case, then they’re taking a gamble on you and it’s up to you to prove your worth.

How will you support me?

If you’re not as experienced in certain areas, but your boss wants to promote you anyway, ask how the company will support you. For instance, will they offer access to training and resources to help you shore up any skill gaps?

The last thing you want is your employer to set you up for failure by putting you in a position you can’t possibly do without extra training and support. So don’t be afraid to ask for it.

What’s in it for me?

Sure, you get promoted. But you should look beyond a fancier job title at the tangible perks you’ll get by taking the promotion. For instance, will the advancement put you on track to reaching your career goals? If it does, then it may be worthwhile to accept it, even if it doesn’t come with a raise.
