As one of the leading employment agencies in Rancho Cordova, Pacific Staffing knows there’s nothing more frustrating than going to a job interview, performing well and hearing nothing back for weeks. What makes matters worse is there’s no set protocol for what to do in this situation. Do you call the hiring manager? Leave a voicemail or wait until they answer? Is email a better route to take? Or do you simply wait?

To help eliminate the confusion should this happen to you, here’s a look at what to do when you don’t hear back after a job interview:

Do Follow Up

When you go to a job interview, always ask the interviewer about next steps at the end of the interview. If they tell you to expect a decision in a week and you don’t hear back from them within that timeframe, then you’ll know to follow up.

When you do, you can simply send an email reiterating your interest in the position, why you’re a good fit and offering any additional information – such as work samples or links to articles you’ve written – that could help the hiring manager make their decision.

If you still don’t hear back, then you can wait a few more days and follow up again. Keep in mind, most hiring managers have a lot on their plates these days and may have every intention of getting back to you; they may simply have been pulled away to work on a hot project or put out a big fire.

However, if you follow up a second time and still don’t hear back, then it’s time to move on.

Be Polite

It can be tempting after that second attempt to send a nasty email or leave an angry voicemail, but swallow your irritation. Sadly, many job candidates today are left in the dark after they interview for a job; while it’s just plain rude, it’s also the reality of the situation.

But if you act out in frustration, your unprofessionalism will be remembered by the hiring manager for this job, as well as for future opportunities.

Use Your Network

Thanks to the likes of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, the chances of knowing someone at the company you interviewed with is much greater today. So if you do know a current employee, reach out to them to see if they’ve heard anything about the position.

In addition, the company may have a notoriously slow hiring process, or could be in the midst of a major initiative that’s impacting time to hire. Whatever the case, when you have a connection in the company, you’ll hopefully be able to get the inside scoop.

Move On

If you don’t hear back, it’s easy to take it personally, but don’t. You never know what’s happening within a company. For instance, the hiring process may have been put on hold due to budget constraints. Or, perhaps, an internal candidate was promoted into the position.

It’s easy to get discouraged, but know that every job candidate experiences some rejection during the job search process, so you’re certainly not alone.
