As Sacramento executive recruiting consultants, Pacific Staffing can tell you: If you’re applying for an advanced or executive level position at a company, expect a panel interview. While these can often feel like an interrogation, quite simply they’re a way for organizations to save time during the interviewing process. The key for surviving one? Prepare.

Don’t Get Ambushed

Walking into an interview expecting one person and being faced with 10 is an unnerving experience. Do not let it happen to you. When setting up the interview – whether through an outside recruiter or internal HR professional – ask about what you can expect for the interview. They will be typically be more than willing to share with you the format for the interview and, if it is a panel, whom you’ll be interviewing with.

Research the Judges

Once you know who will be on the panel, you’ll be able to research more about each person ahead of time. This will give you a clearer picture of what kinds of questions to expect from each judge. For instance, an HR professional may ask questions to help assess cultural fit, while another executive or company CEO may ask specific questions about your skill set and how it can make a positive impact on the organization.

Be Attentive to Each Judge

There may be one or two individuals on the panel who are dominating the conversation. But make an effort to direct your attention to everyone. For example, avoid staring at one “safe” person while answering a question and open your gaze to everyone in the room. Make an effort to connect with each panel member and have a conversation with them. Doing so will make you appear more personable and confident.

Tackle the Bad Cops

During a panel interview, you’ll quickly be able to see who hasn’t made up their mind about you (i.e. the bad cops). When it comes to getting hired, you need to sway those who are undecided. And by responding well to those judges who are toughest on you, you will come across as a composed executive ready to take on the demands of the job.

Bring Your Skills to Life

One of the best ways to illustrate the value you can offer – while also getting the attention of the judges – is to tell a story. Before you head into a panel interview, think of a few different anecdotes from your past experience that best showcase your leadership and strategic thinking skills, as well as other abilities that are highly relevant to the position.

Ask Questions

When it comes to hiring executives, companies want those with critical thinking skills and a strong vision. These types of individuals are generally curious and ask a lot of questions. Don’t disappoint. Arrive at the interview armed with thoughtful questions to ask at the end.
